Leni, Ryder and the trike

Out along the road we’ve all driven along once or twice, in a nice little paddock, two brothers play with their pet lamb and a hundred year-old trike. The sky turns black in a heartbeat and the wind blows in kicking up the stubble and the smell of rain you can only get on a farm. Two boys, young brothers, will see many of these days and think nothing of them as the years pass by. They will take up more space and need bigger clothes, they’ll want fast cars and football. They’ll want to have nothing to do with this paddock, but I bet when things come full circle as they always do, they will long for this paddock and for this day and for these times that can never be re-lived… Except through a photograph. I can smell the rain and see the starry boots running through the golden paddock. I can hear the giggles and the crying and everything that goes with the magic a child gives the world. And I start to think that what I am doing in this photography life  can only be positive. It can only be contributing to peoples lives in a good way.

My photography life is full-tilt. I don’t know any other approach. It’s a sacrifice on so many levels not just for me but for my whole little family every day. It takes all of my energy, all of my heart and all of my soul to keep things where they need to be.

But in those small moments of clarity that pop up for all of us now and then, I know with certainty there’s nothing else I would rather spend my time doing…
